Preview
The Houston Astros host the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at Daikin Park with first pitch set for 8:10 PM ET. Cristian Javier takes the ball for Houston opposite Kansas City left-hander Daniel Lynch IV in what shapes up as a pivotal late-September regular season contest. With the calendar winding down, every game in September carries real weight, and the Astros will look to protect home ground against a Royals club that features one of the most dangerous young shortstops in the American League. Catch the action on Space City Home Network or KBME 790 AM.
Probable Starters: Cristian Javier vs. Daniel Lynch IV
Cristian Javier gets the nod for the Astros. The right-hander has been a fixture in Houston's rotation and brings a high-spin arsenal built around a riding fastball and a swing-and-miss changeup. When Javier is locating and tunneling his pitches effectively, he is difficult to square up — his stuff plays up in the bullpen as well, which gives manager Joe Espada flexibility if things go sideways early.
Daniel Lynch IV draws the assignment for Kansas City. The left-hander is a power arm with the kind of stuff that can keep a lineup off-balance. Houston's lineup will need to be disciplined against him early and force him to work deep into counts, because Lynch can be susceptible to traffic on the bases when his command wavers.

Keys to Watch
Contain Bobby Witt Jr.
Batting second for Kansas City, Bobby Witt Jr. is the engine that makes the Royals offense run. He is an elite baserunning threat and a legitimate middle-of-the-order bat hitting second. Javier will need to keep Witt off the bases and prevent him from manufacturing runs with his legs. If Witt gets on and gets going, Kansas City becomes a different team.
Yordan Alvarez and the Middle of the Astros Order
Houston's lineup is constructed around Yordan Alvarez hitting second, with Isaac Paredes and Jose Altuve following him. That is a demanding stretch for any pitcher to navigate. Lynch will have to execute at a high level to keep the Astros from putting multiple runners on base in the same inning. One mistake to Alvarez in a hitter's count can change a ballgame in a hurry at Daikin Park.
Yainer Diaz Behind the Plate
Yainer Diaz does double duty here — he is a legitimate offensive contributor from the five hole and a strong game-caller for Javier. The Javier-Diaz battery has developed rapport in Houston, and that familiarity matters when Javier needs to trust his secondary offerings in big spots.
Cam Smith and the Bottom of the Order
Cam Smith, Daulton Varsho, and Jorge Barrosa round out the lineup. If the bottom third of Houston's order can get on base and keep the line moving into the top of the order, the Astros have more than enough firepower to put a crooked number on the board.
Prediction
This is a winnable game for the Astros at home. Javier's stuff is built for late-season situations, and the Houston lineup has the depth to grind Lynch for pitches and do damage against the Royals bullpen. Expect the Astros to take care of business at Daikin Park. Houston 5, Kansas City 2.
