Preview
The Houston Astros host the Atlanta Braves on Friday, September 18, 2026, at Daikin Park with first pitch set for 8:10 PM ET. Peter Lambert takes the ball for Houston against Atlanta's Tyler Mahle in a late-September regular season showdown. With the calendar winding down, every game carries weight in the standings, and a Braves lineup that features Ronald Acuña Jr., Matt Olson, and Austin Riley demands Houston's full attention from the opening pitch. This one is on Space City Home Network and 680 AM/93.7 FM The Fan for Astros faithful.
Pitching Matchup: Peter Lambert vs. Tyler Mahle
Peter Lambert draws the start for Houston. The right-hander will need to manage a deep and dangerous Atlanta order that is stacked top to bottom with legitimate threats. Lambert's ability to work through that lineup efficiently — limiting traffic and avoiding the big inning — will be the central storyline on the mound for the home side.
Tyler Mahle counters for the Braves. The Houston offense will look to get to him early. Yordan Alvarez hitting second in this lineup gives manager Joe Espada a powerful presence near the top of the order, and if Mahle struggles with his command, this Astros lineup has the firepower to make him pay.

Keys to Watch
Can Alvarez and Altuve Punish Mahle Early?
Yordan Alvarez hitting second and Jose Altuve slotted fourth gives Houston a lineup that can do serious damage in the early innings. If Peña or Paredes can get on base and set the table, Alvarez and Altuve will have opportunities to put runs on the board fast. Making Mahle work and keeping his pitch count elevated is the blueprint.
Lambert Must Neutralize the Acuña-Olson Core
Ronald Acuña Jr. batting second is a problem for any pitcher. With Matt Olson hitting cleanup and Austin Riley lurking at third base — even batting eighth in this particular lineup — Lambert cannot afford to give up free bases. Every walk in this game is a threat. Lambert needs to attack the zone and trust his defense behind him.
Bottom of the Order Production
Taylor Trammell, LaMonte Wade Jr., and Christian Vázquez hitting seventh through ninth need to contribute. In close games late in the season, the bottom third of a lineup can be the difference between a win and a loss. If those three can keep innings alive, it takes pressure off Alvarez and Altuve to do everything.
Prediction
This is a winnable game at home, but Atlanta's lineup is legitimate and Lambert will have to be sharp. The Astros offense has enough in the top half of the order to generate runs against Mahle. Expect a competitive, mid-range scoring game. Astros 4, Braves 3.
